Discover Jaw-Dropping Vistas at Goosenecks State Park, Utah
San Juan County, Utah
Description
Added by Matt Bloomfield
Make a short detour from Monument Valley to witness a jaw-dropping canyon overlook. More impressive and much less crowded than the ever popular Horseshoe Bend located outside of Page, AZ.
Goosenecks State Park is an overlook point of the San Juan River located in the southeastern region of Utah. The views just off the parking lot are stunning in any season, providing a bird's-eye view into the canyon and the San Juan River about 1,000 feet below the cliff's edge.
Getting there: The Goosenecks are just a short 8.3 mile drive from the small town of Mexican Hat, Utah. The town of Mexican Hat is just northeast of Monument Valley making Goosenecks State Park a great secondary stop if you're already enjoying the scenic drive through southeastern Utah.
From Monument Valley, continue on HW 163 travelling east/northeast past the town of Mexican Hat until you reach the junction of HW 163 and HW 261. Make a left hand turn onto HW 261 and continue a short distance to Rd 316. Make a another left here and continue 3.5 miles to reach your destination.
No fees are required to enter the park at this time and camping is also free, although primitive. If you decide on camping bring plenty of supplies as there is no running water or electricity on site.
