Catch a Sunset at the The Necropolis

Glasgow City, United Kingdom

Description

Added by Natalie F

This is an outstanding view of Glasgow.

The city of Glasgow has a lot to offer and this is a gem I am happy we had the opportunity to check out while we were here. It may seem odd to suggest a graveyard, but it’s a beautiful site.  The graves are intricate and the views are endless.

Some history:

  • The burial ground was intended to be interdenominational
  • The first burial was in 1832: Joseph Levi, a jeweller
  • There have been 50,000 burials here
  • Around 3,5000 tombs are up to 14 feet deep
  • It is now 37 acres in size

We went at night for sunset and walked up the hill to the Necropolis and also walked around the church next door: Glasgow Cathedral, which is the oldest building in Glasgow. Street parking was easy.
