Just up the road from Beauty Spot Gap, Unaka Mountain Overlook is an easily accessible location to watch incredible sunsets.
Unaka Mountain Overlook is one of the highest locations in the Cherokee National Forest. Easily accessibly by vehicle, the overlook towers over the surrounding mountains, including Beauty Spot Gap, and is an ideal spot to camp overnight.
Take Rock Creek Road until you meet the border of North Carolina and Tennessee (depending on which direction you are coming from). Take the gravel road on the side of the Beauty Spot Gap Trailhead and parking area. The gate is locked during the winter months due to snow. Four-wheel drive is recommended. Continue up the gravel road for 4.9 miles and bear left at the fork. There will be a parking area .2 miles further up the gravel road.
There is an extended overlook directed towards the North Carolina mountains and a camping area surrounded by trees and a fence. This is a terrific location to watch the sunset.

This is a great spot for car camping. I would recomend having a high clearance vehicle but that is not necessary.

Unaka Experience
Seriously great view, however the overlook camping area is small and gets crowded easily. Also, the overlook area is unfortunately unkempt, covered in trash, and is a late night party spot for high school/college kids. Wouldnât recommend camping, but a sunset visit is worth the drive up.
