Camp among buffalo and wild horses at Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Nestled right along the Little Missouri River, Cottonwood Campground offers 76 camp sites (including pull-through, back-in, and walk-in sites).

Walk-in sites sit right along the river where buffalo and wild horses are frequently spotted at dusk and dawn. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring.

The campground offers flush toilets in-season and pit toilets year-round. Spigots for drinking water are also located throughout the campground.

Half of the sites are first come, first serve and the others can be reserved online in advance. Sites cost $14 per night in the summer season and $7 per night in the winter season.

Camp at Cottonwood Campground in Theodore Roosevelt National Park Reviews

Right on the river, just bring some good bug spray! First come first serve

We had a friendly bison in the campground during our stay. There isn't a lot of shade, but the tall grass gives you some property. The campground is centrally located - near the loop road, hiking trails, and the super-cute town of Medora.

Planned a long weekend backpacking trip with my two boys (12 and 14) which included an overnight stay at the Cottonwood Campground. It was just before school started so plenty of open camp sites. We walked down to the Little Missouri River for some exploring and ended up squishing around bare foot on the mud bars (as opposed to sand bars) for almost two hours - great fun! In the morning we headed for the Petrified Forest Loop, but not before a herd of buffalo wandered through the campground as we were packing up. It is not often that a campground is as memorable as being out on the trail, but this one was.
