Hike this dormant, sister volcano to Concepción. You'll ascend 4,573 feet above Lake Nicaragua. Swim in the lagoon in the crater of the volcano.

The hike up this volcano, although slightly less challenging than Concepción, can take approximately 8 hours. One of the most popular trails starts in Balgüe and is 4.5km one way, but the volcano can also be accessed from Merida or Santa Cruz.

The trail up this volcano is challenging with a steady climb. The narrow passage was carved out of the rocks by water. Nicaragua's humidity leads to this trail being pretty muddy and slippery. As you're climbing, there won't be too much of a view as you'll be surrounded by a dense forrest. Once you reach the top of the volcano, you can climb down into the crater, which houses a lagoon and forrest. If you need to cool off from the long ascent, jump in the lake, you've earned it!

When planning this challenging climb, I suggest you investigate guiding companies to provide you with important local knowledge and care as you head out for this 8 hour climb. Your hotel should be able to connect you with a guide or outfitter or you can check out OmetepeTours.

Climb Ometepe Island's Maderas Reviews

By far my favorite thing to do in Ometepe when I was there last year. I was told that some local expats like to hike and camp for the night in the crater. Will have to do that the next time I visit Ometepe.
