The Torlesse and Big Ben are high, dry mountain rangeswith remarkable flora and fauna. Slim-leaved snowtussock/wï kura is common and the high-altitude tussockgrasslands represent the eastern limit of mid-ribbed snowtussock.

From the lay-by at the top of Porters Pass, follow anunmarked but well-worn trail up through low scrub andtussock and across gravel screes towards Foggy Peak.

Large cairns mark the way in places. (1–2 hours one way)Beyond Foggy Peak follow the broad ridge. The ridgenarrows for the final climb to the trig on the summit ofCastle Hill Peak. (2–4 hours one way)

Hurther exploration: The GapFrom Castle Hill Peak, experienced parties can traverseacross to The Gap. Beyond peak 1941 sidle just off thenorth side of the ridge until you reach the bluffs above TheGap. From The Gap, a steep scree slope and rocky ridgeprovide a good route down to the Kowai Stream. Somerock scrambling is required.
