Hike the Lovers' Leap Trail

This trail is an easy walk through cacti and desert vegetation. Hikers are allowed to collect rocks while hiking this trail. There are designated places where hikers can look for rocks. There are very good views of the Florida Mountains and the valley to the west. In the springtime many blooming cacti can also be enjoyed. This trail starts as a jeep road off Gap Road. Eventually it turns into just a hiking trail. The climb is moderate and has some very nice views along the way. Some of the cliff are quite impressive. Nice plants also can be seen. This is BLM property so BLM rules apply.

We drove through the desert  on a winding dirt road. Once at the cone we started our climb to the top. The ascent is not too difficult  and once on top we had very good views of the surrounding landscape. Lots of interesting rock formations and also plants. Highway 27 stretches from Highway 26, west of Hatch, to Hillsboro, NM. where it merges with NM 152. From there drive east to Interstate 25 near Lake Caballo where the scenic byway ends. It is a winding road with nice mountain views and a ghost town that is well worth a stop. Drove fro El Paso to the crater in the Potrillo Wilderness Study area a on a series of county dirt roads. Some of the roads are quite rough. Interesting place to explore. Deep crater and large lava fields. Good views of the surrounding plains. The place is very isolated and quiet. Best to get a map from BLM if possible, many dirt roads are not marked.

Drove from El Paso to cox Peak this morning. About 45 miles from El Paso. The roads to the mountains are in good condition. Did not hike up the mountain but hiked around the base and enjoyed the views and the cacti. There is not a trail to the top of the mountains and scrambling up the mountain sides is required.
