Kayak Camp at Janes Island State Park
Crisfield, Maryland
Description
Added by Ashley Stimpson
Enjoy fishing, swimming, and waking up to a Chesapeake sunrise on your own private island.
Everyone goes to the Eastern Shore. Few people get to experience the Bay like this.
The journey out to the Long Point backcountry site is a bit arduous, especially if you haven't studied the tide charts (guilty). The last mile or so requires a paddle through rough, open waters. Crab and cruising boats are plenty. In short: be prepared and be careful!
The island itself is nearly impassable by foot. But if you paddle to the southeast side, you'll be able to beach your boat only a few feet from the 4 wooden platforms that comprise the site (only one person/group can reserve the island at a time, despite the multiple sites). One site in particular offers incredible views, particularly at sunset. Biting insects (a lot of them) and jellyfish are rampant during mid-summer, so be ready or plan a spring/fall/winter trip.
Call the park in advance to reserve one of the three backcountry sites (Long Point is the pick of the litter). Kayaks and canoes are available at the park office for 50 dollars a day.
