This swimming hole is off the beaten path and a great spot to picnic/swim/hike. It's about 30 minutes from Carbondale, IL.

Let me start by saying that I'm unsure what the official name of this place is- on Google Maps it's called "Ferne Clyffe Waterfall", but the locals refer to it as Hippie Hollow. (There is no mention of it on Ferne Clyffe State Park's website)

When you arrive at the creek crossing the gravel road, you've made it to the overlook of Hippie Hollow. Park your car here and walk about 15 feet up the road from the creek to the trailhead, on the left side. Hike the trail about .5 miles down to the base of the waterfall/swimming hole. From here, the trail continues on through the woods. Depending on recent weather, the waterfall may or may not be flowing. It was "turned off" when I was there, but still a beautiful, scenic spot.
