Description

The cave is located in the northern part of Iceland in the Burfell lava field not far from Lake Myvatn. The cave is full of beautiful ice sculptures that are decades old; one of Icelands largest natural lava caves. Experience and appreciate how the cave was made, walk through the lava field, and enjoy the calm/dark cave that gives you a sense of relaxation.

Saga Travel have exclusive rights to the 3,500 year old ice cave, which is on private property. They take much pride and respect towards it, and it shows. The cave has three levels that all have a unique story to tell.

Saga Travel will either pick you up or in Lake Myvatn or meet you at the Saga Travel Center. The drive is about 45 minutes long on a very rough road that drives through crater row of Lúdentarborgir to the roots of Mt. Hvannfell. The short 20 minute hike starts while you walk through the lava field where you arrive at a white trailer to get the necessary cave gear needed. Head down the stairs to the entrance of the cave where you will have to squeeze through the opening into the first level. Crawl, pull yourself, and slide into the other levels of the cave. 370 meters long of Icelands  greatest natural ice sculptures. Dress warm, the cave is around 0 degrees C. I'll let you experience the rest. Safe travels!
