Harper's Topiary Garden
San Diego, California
Description
Added by The Outbound Collective
Harper's Topiary Garden in San Diego's Mission Hills neighborhood is a whimsical front yard transformation by Edna and Alex Harper. 15 years ago, the Harpers decided to create an enchanting topiary garden for everyone to enjoy.
Unlike typical topiaries shaped around wire frames, Edna's sculptures are crafted from mature shrubs that are carefully pruned and guided, making them unique solid foliage pieces. The Harpers share their living sculptures with visitors free of charge, as long as everyone treats the garden with care and respect. This private residence offers a quiet escape to marvel at the creativity and dedication behind the topiary art.
To visit Harper's Topiary Garden, you can walk from Balboa park and cross the Spruce Street suspension bridge, which takes about 45 minutes and is a nice urban hike. If driving, be prepared for the steep incline of Vine Street.
Reminder: Observe quietly and avoid touching or entering the garden.
