Camp at Twin Peaks Campground
Ajo, Arizona
Description

Epic camping in the middle of the Sonoran Desert.
Twin Peaks is the primary campground at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, minutes from the Mexican border in southern Arizona.
This campground has it all: it's affordable, it's in the middle of a beautiful and remote desert, and it's surrounded by hiking.
Twin Peaks is first come first served. If the campground is full you are not out of luck, there is ample boondocking available just outside the monument in Why, Arizona.
The campground supplies potable water, clean bathrooms, solar showers and an amphitheater for evening talks (and you should go to one, they are excellent). The Visitor Center is a short hike away. The campground is divided into three sections: RV's with generators, RV's without generators, and tent camping. Generator hours are delightfully sparse (two hours in the morning, two in the evening).
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a Dark Sky park, so get ready for some epic night photography.
Be sure to leave your hood up overnight, and illuminate under your vehicle if possible. Packrats abound!
Warning: Organ Pipe National Monument is used daily by human and drug smugglers. There are many signs around the campground to warn you of this. Smugglers in general want nothing to do with you, and the Border Patrol presence is heavy in this park. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times. That being said, I never felt unsafe while camping or hiking.
