Description

Added by Chris O'Sullivan

Fly fish the beautiful, clear waters of the Animas River in arguably one of the most beautiful locations in Colorado.

While the Animas River runs for miles in the San Juan National Forest, a beautiful (and accessible) stretch runs right through Silverton, CO. Here, you can fish, hike, or chill.

The river is fast with very few pockets for the trout to hide; however, if you search around enough, you'll find a fish or two (at least I did!). There are also a number of trails that take you around the train tracks and river, which is great for hiking and taking photos. It truly is a breathtaking view.

How to get there:

If you're driving northbound on highway 550 from Durango, look for a gravel road turnoff on your right just as you enter the town of Silverton. The road is called county road 31 on a GPS. If you pass the Sonoco gas station, you've gone too far. Once on county road 31, drive until you get to the end of the path. That's it!

Warning:

If I remember correctly, there is private property around this section, so be careful not to trespass!

Fly Fish the Animas River Reviews

After the Gold King Mine spills, the Animas is slowly coming back to its lovely clear waters. I didnt catch a fish that day,but they do exist. Silverton is a glimpse of the past to treasure.
