You would never suspect such a stunning and powerful group of waterfalls would be so nearby the flat and mostly unassuming Highway 53 heading toward Superior, WI. But not far off the road is Amnicon Falls State Park which looks akin to the likes of Temperance River along MN's far north shore. It's short (you can see all it has to offer in about an hour) but it's gorgeous. My visit was noonish on a hot sunny summer weekend so it was busy but not packed. Bring a book and a picnic and spend some time here by the rushing waterfalls. My favorite was Snake Pit Falls, tucked in the back away from most of the visitors, like your own private oasis. The trail is mostly kid-friendly (not very stroller-friendly) but there are no barriers to prevent falling in so keep an eye on them. Easy leisurely hike around the falls.

For being relatively easy, this hike is so awesome! Must haves: good traction water shoes, neoprene socks, walking stick. The rocks are large, slippery and generally not visible below the water at all, so you have to feel out your footing almost every step. Gotta have that walking stick to help with stability! All in all, this hike was phenomenal. The only downside was how popular it is... Pretty thick crowds navigating the river with you but it thins out eventually. You won't get much peace and quiet on this hike unless you go a lot further in.

This was a really awesome hike!! As previously mentioned it takes quite a bit of scrambling over and around large rocks; not really a marked trail to go by, just follow the river. Everyone in our group ran out of water and we all carried our own 3L hydration packs, so I'd recommend bringing iodine pills or Life Straw as backup. Lastly, make sure you have enough energy and leg strength to get back out of the canyon! Hardest hike out I've ever done. But in the end, it's worth it!
