Visit this popular trail just thirty minutes out from Seattle, great for first time hikers wanting to do a "real hike", with a gem of a view at the end as a reward.
This scenic two-miler hike can easily be done with children and pets, which is what makes this conveniently close trail so popular. If you are someone looking to enjoy the trail and the view to yourself I strongly suggest being there at the crack of dawn to avoid the crowds. With that being said I went up with a pack and my dog (Charlie, who also had a pack) and it took us about an hour and a half, no stops, no breaks, other than when we stopped for people passing us on the trail (Charlie's a bit of a wide load).
The trail is in great shape, with no obstacles but still gives you that "outdoors" feeling with glimpses of the lake as you begin to slowly gain elevation, such a tease. The only other thing that kept catching my eye was the insane amount of trash... Of anything though that is in this description the most important note to make, is that if you are going to tackle this hike take a backpack of some sort with a bag that you can use for trash. This trail had so much trash off to each side that varied from plastic water bottles, to snack wrappers, to dog poop bag with dog poop. Please respect the trail by bringing everything that you bring in, back out with you, that includes your trash. I'm all for people getting outside and enjoying nature but it's crucial that everyone participates in "pack it in, pack it out", even if it's dog poop.
Aside from all the trash the hike up is very enjoyable, with a moderate slope ascending up, the secret to getting there without feeling like you're going to die is pacing yourself and going slow if you need to; this will also give you a chance to really slow down and enjoy the scenery. Once you make it to the top the view is worth the whole trip, with amazing views of Mt. Si, Mt. Washington, Mailbox Peak, and Rattlesnake Lake, which creates the perfect place to have lunch and soak in the scene and good vibes.
