Distance: 8.4 miles roundtripElevation gain: 2,200 ftStunning lake and Colchuck Glacier set between rocky peaks of Colchuck and DragontailEnchantments Colchuck Zone in Alpine Lakes WildernessChance to see wildlife
Colchuck Lake sits at the edge of Aasgard Pass (2,200 ft), one of the gateways to the Enchantments. In the summer, the lake's clear blue water tempts the hardy to jump in and swim. The large rocks along the edge of the lake are a great place to picnic while watching fellow hikers climb Aasgard Pass, or to just relax and soak in the beauty. You might also get lucky and see a mountain goat. This is a great place for night photography, as well.
The trail begins at 3,400 feet through forest alongside Mountaineer Creek, which provides cold water for cooling off on a hot day. It doesn't take long to enter into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, and into a more open forest of lodgepole pine and boulders. After crossing a log bridge at around 1.75 miles (4,000 ft), the trail starts to climb and is more exposed to the sun.
At 2.5 miles (4,500 ft), you will come to a junction. To the left is the way to Colchuck Lake, while the right leads to Lake Stuart. After turning left, you will cross over Mountaineer Creek and begin to climb through boulders as the trail becomes steeper, rocky and root exposed. The edge of Colchuck Lake is reached at 4.5 miles.
If camping between June 15 and October 15, be sure to secure a permit to camp in this area at the Leavenworth Ranger Station or online, ahead of time. But don't despair if you can't land a permit, since this also makes for a great day hike, with camping areas not far from the trailhead. Note that dogs are not permitted, and hiking groups cannot exceed 8 people.
