Hiking to Big Four Ice Caves
Granite Falls, Washington
Description
Added by Emily Masse
• Ice caves and glacier• Easy access• Beautiful waterfalls• Fresh air
Located in the south Cascades in Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Park, Washington, Big 4 ice caves offer a great adventure, perfect on a short time frame. Situated a 15 minute walk off the Mountain Loop Highway, these ice caves are a must.
Due to the unstable state of the ice, it is not recommended to venture into the caves, however, if you decide to explore them, caution needs to be taken. If you do, you are greatly rewarded with a "skylight" and waterfall.
The cold water dripping from the ceiling, in addition to the overall damp chill, make the caves a cool place to spend your afternoon enjoying the hydrology and glacial structure. If you look hard enough you can see different sediment lines, and turquoise-blue colours in the ice walls.
