Come discover this springtime gem that will surely leave a life long imprint on the mind. The views over the Gorge are sure to leave you in total awe but the flowers will leave you completely breathless.

If you're really looking see all of the aspects that make the Pacific Northwest so unique, you're not going to want to miss this hike. With unbelievable views of the Colombia River Gorge and phenomenal wildflowers that coat the sides of the mountain, this one is sure to make it into the memory books.

As soon as you arrive, like so many other popular trails, the parking can either be pleasant and abundant, or overwhelmingly packed. Proper planning is a must-especially considering that this hike is a whopping 3 hours from the city.

To the right side of the parking lot you will see the information board that provides a map of the hike you're about to take on. Continue just a little farther and find a restroom, nothing fancy, but be sure to take advantage of it before heading up since this is the only restroom available. Immediately after you pass the restrooms you will begin the incredible climb with a solid incline that seems practically vertical. A bit of advice: pace yourself, this is only the beginning of the leg and lung work out that's coming.

After .7 miles the trail breaks, the left leading to a "More Difficult" route (which I hear is steep as heck), and the right taking you on a "Less Difficult" route, this way is roughly .4 miles longer, however, I am very glad we chose to go the "easier" trail. About a mile past the fork you reach a lower view point at about 1600 feet of elevation which offers scenic views showing your progress up the mountain. This is the half-way mark, and is a great place to take a break and enjoy the view.

A little over 1/2 mile the trail meets back up with the "More Difficult" trail. Brace yourself, the next 1/2 mile starts out very steep but the reward is worth it; an amazing view from Puppy Dog Lookout at an incredible 2500 feet elevation. This is a good spot to stop at and take in the view if you want a much less populated lookout space. An inviting bench offers an opportunity for scenic pictures of the Columbia and the lush green mountains just on the other side in Oregon.

Once you decide to continue on to see the main feature of this hike, head back onto the trail and power through; there's only about 1/2 mile left to the summit. As you continue up the mountain, the trail will begin to narrow down to a one person trail; this is when you know you're close. Keep your eyes peeled for a break in the vegetation on your left, it's going to reveal the marvel you've been climbing to see. A little further you'll find the clearing where you are welcomed by a sea of yellow wildflowers that run along the hillsides.

You've made it! Hillsides full of Balsamroot, sprinklings of Indian Paintbrush and Lupine, along with sideways growing trees (due to the crazy strong wind) make this meadow a real eye-catcher. As you march forward there is a bend on the trail that many hikers congregate at for lunch and photos. This is a nice spot, however it gets crowded quickly and space can become limited. From here, there is about 15 minutes (max) left until you reach the summit.
