Backpack to Foggy Lake

To begin your adventure, head past Granite Falls and follow the Mountain Loop Highway to the Barlow Pass Trailhead. Enjoy your drive along the Mountain Loop Highway, taking in the mountains and towering evergreens as you wind along the ice blue Sauk River. After parking at the Barlow Pass Trailhead walk down the road to the gate and "road closed" sign. Past the gate you'll walk down an old gravel road that parallels the river -- relish the even grade while you can, because the trail soon goes UP. This flat portion of the trail goes through thick bushes and streams, so keep an eye out for salmonberrys and prepare for wet feet. Soon the trail enters thick forest and joins the old miners trail. These miners apparently had calves of steel and no time for switchbacks, for the trail quickly ascends above the tree line. After conquering the tree line you'll be greeted by sweeping views of the cascades, gushing waterfalls, and colorful wildflowers. The trail then turns rough, winding up through bolders. Once you pop over the crest and gaze upon Gothic Basin, it's a jaw dropping sight. Push up and over the boulders and follow the cairns to Foggy Lake. It's possible to follow a footpath around the lake and up to the saddle, a short climb that is well worth it. The saddle is wedged between Gothic Peak and Del Campo Peak with views of layers upon layers of snowcapped mountains.
