Winter Day Hike to Snow Lake

Leavenworth, Washington

Description

Added by Paige Racioppo

A 7.2 mile hike with stunning views the entire way up! Not only is the view of the lake amazing but the entire journey there is amazing on its own. The hike itself is fairly easy, when going early in the morning when there hasn't been much new snowfall it can get pretty icy and slick in a few places. Once you get to the the top, before dropping down to the lake, I recommend you walk the few extra feet up to the view point because it's truly breathtaking. Do NOT call it quits there, make sure you walk down to the lake and take your time exploring around there. There's one trail that leads you all the way down to the lake (I wouldn't recommend walking on lake) and another that leads you around it to another amazing view point that is a must see! There are places to camp when you take the trail around the lake and if you continue on a few miles the trail will take you to Gem Lake.

The trailhead is on the right side of the Alpental Ski area parking lot; you start at about 2,600 feet of elevation, you will gain about 1,800 feet of elevation throughout the hike. The very beginning of the hike is extremely icy, but don't let it fool you, the trail condition improves as you go on. The first 1.5 miles or so is quite easy, you gradually ascend up, crossing a few little frozen steams. Around the time you see the Source Lake Lookout sign the incline increases and the trail begins to switchback as you climb up about 500 feet. As the trail begins to flatten out, you have arrived at the view point looking over the lake, there's a great spot to stop and take pictures there or you can continue on to the lake. As you continue on down to the lake you wil come across a sign and a place where the trail splits, to the left it continues on to the lake and to the right you cross the creek and it leads you around the lake and to an amazing view point. Personally I would recommend going both ways as long as you have time! The highest elevation that you reach is about 4,400 feet of elevation, and I will warn you, on a nice day there are quite a few people on the trail!
