Amazing Views, Beautiful Trails, Great for Overnights

This trip was a last minute decision after we found out our original destination was closed due to the dam construction. The Ranger at the station told us this trail would be the next best thing.

We headed to the trail head with all of our gear, attached our overnight tags and tied our shoes tight. We had no clue where we would end up down this trail.

The hike started fairly easy. Not to much gain and beautiful trees. The forest in the Olympics is nothing like the Cascades, it has almost a fairy tale feel. There was an amazing view point we stopped at for a photo op before heading on our way down to the river in Rica Canyon. If you are looking for a shorter over night, there are a few great spots by the river.

Along the trail is an AWESOME old cabin named Michael's cabin. He was one of the original trail keepers. Very cool history.

The trail doesn't start to really gain until right after Lillian Camp. This "hill" is where most of the elevation gain comes from. Be patient, its worth it.

12 miles after our start, we ended our day just short of Mary's camp right next to the river. It was hands down one of the best trips. The stars were out and perfect. The fire burnt in our fire pit and we just sat and enjoyed our Mountain House meals. After dinner there were some shooting stars and we just relaxed until bed.

Our trip back we took another trail (there are a few branches down the Elwha trail) and 9 miles later we were back at the car.

Please note also, the trail goes a lot further than we went and you may choose to do multiple nights and miles.
