Climb Butt Mountain Fire Tower

Ripplemead, Virginia

Description

Added by Geo Min

Butt Mountain Fire Tower offers an amazing view and perfect sunset opportunities from the top after a sketchy climb up.

Due to the rough road conditions, it is highly suggested to take a Jeep, truck, or SUV up the road.

Branching off of US-460, drive 3.7 miles down US-613, then turn left to US-714 (Little Meadow Road). After turning to US-714, you can either drive the 7.1 miles to Butt Mountain Fire Tower up the incredibly rough road, or drive around 5-6 miles and park on the side of the road and walk to Butt Mountain Fire Tower if your car is unsuitable. As you get less than 0.5 miles to Butt Mountain Fire Tower, there will be a fork on the road. Take the left road to reach the Fire Tower.

The climb up the tower is sketchy and dangerous, so be certain that you are in good condition to climb up.

If you do climb the tower, the views on the top are amazing and photograph-worthy. Be safe and aware!

If you don't do the climb, there is an outlook near the Fire Tower, so you can catch the sunset in two spots.

For an added bonus, there is a 3/4 mile trail to Barney's Wall on the left side of the road after 5-6 miles up US-714. Search for the small trail sign on the left side if you decide to take the detour to Barney's Wall.
