An amazing sunrise from the most photographed spot on the Appalachian Trail with a short hike from Campbell Shelter

The sunrise at McAfee Knob is something you can't miss if you decide to backpack or hike through this scenic area. However, this trip does require an overnight stay at Campbell Shelter.

From the McAfee Knob trailhead to Campbell Shelter, it takes 4.5 miles to hike, and it also passes through the Knob if you want to inspect the terrain. As you arrive to Campbell Shelter and plan to sleep, set an alarm about 1-2 hours before the expected sunrise time. In the morning, hike the 0.9 miles up slowly and carefully, and bring breakfast and enjoy the sunrise.

After the sunrise, you can either hike back to the trailhead or backpack further on the Appalachian Trail.
