​This Natural Wonders Road Trip Will Show You Texas Like You’ve Never Seen It Before​

Unless you count Alaska (and Texans never do), Texas is the biggest state in the United States. It is also one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful states, although typically this fact gets overshadowed by its size. If you've ever wondered what makes Texans so slavishly devoted to their state and so proud of calling Texas home, this natural wonders road trip will give you the chance to see Texas in a whole new, brighter and, of course, bigger light.

Stop 1: Sonora, TX - Caverns of Sonora

The Caverns of Sonora earn their reputation as one of the world's most breathtaking caverns honestly. These natural formations literally glisten with ancient wonder. There are several types of tours for all ages.

Stop 2: Vanderpool, TX - Lost Maples State Natural Area


The best time to visit this natural treasure is during the fall and early winter when the leaves begin to turn. The hikes are easy and thoroughly enjoyable.

Stop 3: Wimberly, TX - Jacob's Well

Jacob's Well is one of only a handful of natural swimming pools in the state, and is one of the most beautiful and mysterious. With a 200 foot drop down into the abyss of the artesian well waters, Jacob's Well is not only a fun family-friendly spot but attracts divers from around the world.

Stop 4: Dripping Springs, TX - Hamilton Pool

Hamilton Pool is so visually stunning you might be tempted to think it is manmade. But the semi-circular limestone formation, with its trickling waterfalls and blue-green pool is totally natural. It is about one mile from the parking lot to the pool over flat ground.

Stop 5: Fredericksburg, TX - Willow City Loop

You can drive this loop and enjoy the abundance of native wildflowers. But you might have to stop and rotate drivers so everyone can have a chance to simply soak in the view.

Stop 6: Fredericksburg, TX - Enchanted Rock

Enchanted Rock will get you going after all that sitting during your Willow City Loop drive. This natural rock formation is a popular destination to watch the sunrise and sunset for its gorgeous, unobstructed views. You will know you've found it when you see a pinkish mountainous rock rising up out of the countryside.

Stop 7: Bend, TX - Gorman Falls

Gorman Falls is one of Texas's true natural treasures. These 60 foot falls require only a short, easy hike and are more soothing and peaceful to listen to than even the ocean waves.

Stop 8: Canyon, TX - Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon's nickname, the "Grand Canyon of Texas," means it simply must be seen to be believed. It is like meeting the Grand Canyon's little sister - same red rock formations, same awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets, just a lot closer to home.

Stop 9: Big Bend, TX - Big Bend National Park

Big Bend is a year-round family favorite. If you've ever thought Texas doesn't have mountains, think again when you come face-to-face with the Chisos mountain chain. There are activities for all ages and abilities and the park has plenty of amenities if you want to camp out or stay in one of the on-site cabins.

Visiting all nine of these natural wonders will take you around 20 hours round-trip - perfect for a spring break adventure or holiday excursion. So get out your binoculars, take your car for a tune-up, load your cooler up with snacks and prepare to use the heck out of those low Texas insurance rates you've been enjoying, because this trip is about to take you places you have never seen before!
