This minimally traveled section of Vermont’s Long Trail offers maximum variety for the mileage: wildlife, ponds, a deep gorge, plus a mountain view.
Head south on the Long Trail to Ritterbush Pond. Then meander through hardwoods to an A-frame "gateway" formed by two boulders, and enter Devil’s Gulch–a lush ravine with 175-foot-high walls. Then return through the gulch and close the loop by skirting the shore of Big Muddy Pond.
The Devil’s Gulch Trail is a portion of the Long Trail in Eden, VT. There is a parking lot easily available across the street and just follow the signs to a gap in the bushes on the opposite side of the road. This portion of the Long Trail is rather simple, passing alongside mostly greenery you can catch the occasional glimpse of Ritterbush Pond while meandering through the thick of it all. With minor elevation changes, they can ascend and descend rather quickly for a good workout. Continue along the Long Trail and you will begin an upward ascent for a little bit before reaching the gulch. It’s a beautiful view with two huge boulders leaning on one another continuing into a rocky area overgrown by trees and greenery. It is totally worth the effort to get there and play around in the boulders.
After exploring for a bit just turn around and start heading back the way you came in. You will reach an intersection of the Long Trail and Babcock Trail to make this hike more of a loop take the left onto the Babcock trail. While the views won’t change too much you will catch glimpses of Big Muddy Pond off the Babcock Trail. When you hit the road you are about a quarter mile down from the parking area but there is a designated trail across the street to link you back to your car.
