About this place

Added by Chris Engelsman

Portal is one of the classic mountain bike trails in Moab. This trail has exposure and is meant for advanced riders.

If you are looking to ride one of Moab's famed mountain bike trails, then look no further than the Portal Trail. It's a short 2-mile trail that starts on the rim above the Colorado River and descends 1,388.

To access the Portal Trail you can take a shuttle from town to the top of the Magnificent 7/Gemini Bridges trail system and there are multiple shuttle services (Coyote, Poison Spider, Moab Cyclery). If going this route, it's approximately a 22-mile ride with a steep climb up Gold Bar on a slick rock jeep trail.

Once you hit the descent of Portal, you'll have fantastic views of the Moab Valley and the Colorado River. There is trail is exposed and people have died on it, so only ride it if you are an advanced or expert rider. That being said, Portal offers some of the best technical riding. Once you are half-way through the 2-mile descent, the trail looses it's exposure and becomes a fun technical descent. Bring your big suspension bike.

Trails from Mag7/Gemini Bridges: Getaway to Bull Run to Arth's Corner to Little Canyon to Gold Bar to Gold Bar Rim to Portal

If you want to make this a shorter loop ride you can start at the Poison Spider Trailhead. Going this route, you'll have 1,400 foot climb over 8 miles before you hit the start of Portal.

Please note: The pin drop for this trail is located at the bottom of the trail on Highway 279 next to the Colorado River.
