Hike the Ding and Dang Loop in the San Rafael Swell

Green River, Utah

Description

Added by J Spencer Smith

A fun 5 mile loop hike through narrow and obstacle slot canyonsPerfect for group hikes that requires light rock climbing and advanced hiking skills15-20 minute drive from Goblin Valley State ParkNot very crowded

This awesome loop hike is located in the San Rafael Swell. The idea of the hike is to hike up the first canyon (Ding Canyon) and then loop around to descend the second canyon. (Dang Canyon)

HOW TO GET THERE:
Ding and Dang is not a popular hike near Goblin Valley State Park. Most of the tourist will hike the popular hike called Little Wild Horse Canyon. Ding and Dang is only another 2.5 miles down the road. The road start to get a little rough, but the trail head is marked with a large oak tree and an information post.

You begin the hike by hiking nearly a mile to a turnoff that will take you up Ding Canyon. Most hikers suggest that you take this route, however its possible to go backwards by going up Dang canyon and down Ding.

Inside the slot canyons, there are a few small 10-15 feet drop offs that require careful maneuvering skills around the rocks. Fellow hikers from the past have left rope at the difficult sections. The hike also contains a couple of puddles inside the canyons. Dang canyon has a small section of water that can reach waist high.

CAMPGROUNDS:
There are many spots to camp in the San Rafael Swell. Many have camped near the trail head. The popular campsites are inside the Goblin Valley State Park.

Note: These slot canyons are known for having flash floods. Please check the weather forecast before starting your hike.
