Description

Added by Tara Butler

This hike began in Utah at the Paria Canyon/Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness. The hike took 3 full days and was roughly 38 miles long throughout Navajo Sandstone cliffs.

We began at the White House trailhead for a shorter milage hike. Originally our plan was to hike four days through the canyon, but the night before we planned to set out the canyon was hit with a flash flood. Once you hike down into the canyon you must either complete the hike or backtrack. Permits are required. By following the Paria River through the canyon you are lead around winding corners, large cliffs and sandy beaches that house life to trees and other desert flora/fauna. In some areas it is easy to identify where previous hikers have camped, however the trace of humans in the canyon is nonexistent. There are a few springs for water, however several appeared to be dry...in this case, let the river water settle and filter/purify it, or you will become severely dehydrated.  Be prepared to get wet...you hike in and out of the river frequently and will encounter quicksand post flash flood.
