Backpack La Verkin Creek Trail
New Harmony, Utah
Description
Added by Carrie Roc
Great area for day hiking or backpacking. Awesome trail that follows along a creek and beautiful canyon walls. Kolob Arch is one of the largest free standing arches in the US, allegedly.
Kolob Canyon is in the northern area of Zion, you get there from I-15 near New Harmony, U.T., about midway between St. George and Cedar City. The trail begins at Lee Pass Trailhead, the parking lot is on your left approx. 3 miles from the ranger station, it's not really marked. Parking is limited at the trailhead, get there early or hike midweek, there is a parking lot about a half mile before the trailhead parking lot, but you will be walking uphill! If you're backpacking, you will need a permit, from the ranger station at the entrance. The trail starts as a descent for a few miles covering about 1000ft in elevation. Once you're hiking along the creek the trail is mostly flat. There is no water until about mile 3-4 when you reach La Verkin Creek. Once you reach the creek, this is a great area to stop and have lunch or a snack, even go for a swim. The trail near the creek is sandy in many areas, so keep that in mind, it can slow you down a bit. There are designated campsites along the trail, some of them can be reserved as walk-in the day of, or day before. Most of the campsites can be reserved online through Zion National Park's website. Campsites 1-3 don't have access to water, but the rest of them are spread out along the creek. The trail leading to the Kolob arch is after passing campsites 8-9 and a stream crossing, there is a sign, you can't miss it. The trail to the arch is a half mile, once you get there there is a sign, but look to your left (west) and up, you will see the arch. If you are backpacking, there is also Beartrap Canyon Falls which adds an extra 4+ miles round trip to your hike, but definitely worth it if you have the time (picture of waterfall shown). The hike back to the trailhead can get exhausting, especially if you are doing a day hike, remember you have that 1000ft gain in elevation at the end of your hike. Total miles will be 14 if you're doing a day hike to the arch. Overall, if you want to get away from the crowds in the main park, this is a great option to see other areas of Zion.
