Re-live the legend of King Arthur and discover Merlin's Cave at this medieval site on the Cornish coast.
If you love tales of Knights and legends, then you simply HAVE to visit Tintagel on the Cornwall coast in England. Even if you think these stories are just for kids, visiting for the scenery and the history alone is worth it.
The Legend / The History
Tintagel is a small village in North Cornwall, in the south of England, and Tintagel Castle is a medieval fortress located on a small island just across from the mainland.
Legends tell that the castle is the birthplace of the King Arthur, and when you are here, you can see how the dramatic landscape could have inspired so many stories. Down by the ocean, you'll also find "Merlin's Cave" which can be reached at certain times of day depending on the times.
As you explore the castle ruins and the caves, it's easy to picture the fantasy world of King Arthur, Merlin, knights and sorcerers.
Hiking Around The Area
Whilst Tintagel is definitely a family-friendly day out, there is a lot-of walking to do, and lots of steps!
There are a few places to park in the village of Tintagel (all paid), and from there you'll have to walk to the entrance and visitor centre. At the visitor centre you'll find a cafe and toilets.
Enter through the visitor centre, and you'll cross onto the island via a large bridge. Once across, you're free to explore the whole island from top to bottom.
When the tide is out, you can explore the beaches and caves, then head up high to explore the castle ruins and the high sea cliffs.
On the headland at the very top there are often nesting sea birds, and wonderful bronze statue of King Arthur called "Gallos".
