Join Windhoek, early morning drive to Namib Desert via Naukluft mountains

You will be collected from your Windhoek accommodation between 08:00 and 08:30. Please be ready before this time. From Windhoek we drive over the Eros Mountains and along scenic roads towards the south-west desert. We also pass sections of the Naukluft Mountains that are significant for their geological history of the area. Leaving the central plateau via the beautiful Remhoogte Pass we reach the tiny settlement of Solitaire. From here we drive through open grass savannah and farmland before reaching our accommodation amongst the red sand dunes of the Namib desert. The late afternoon and evening colours are sensational. Overnight: Standard Room in Sossusvlei Lodge or similar. (Approx driving distance 350km).

Sesriem and Sossusvlei

This morning we leave before dawn so that we can watch the sunrise over the desert. We pass through Sesriem, the gateway to the dunes, and continue as far as we can into the Sossusvlei dune field by vehicle. Here some of the biggest sand dunes in the world are constantly shifting and changing shape with the winds. We will walk the 5km into Deadvlei - an ancient clay pan with skeleton camel thorn trees blackened by years in the sun scattered across it - and return to our vehcile by 4WD shuttle. Photographic opportunities abound with the soft light of dawn illuminating the crest of the dunes and then turning brilliant orange down the back. Ancient mineral pans, stunted camel thorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or ostrich make it an unforgettable experience. We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei, also visiting Dune 45. We return to Sesriem for lunch then take a short excursion to Sesriem Canyon before returning to our accommodation. Overnight: Standard Room in Sossusvlei Lodge or similar. (Approx driving distance 125km).

Return to Windhoek, trip concludes

After breakfast we begin our journey back to Windhoek, following a different route. We cross the Khomas Hochland Mountain Range via the massive Gamsberg Pass to arrive in Windhoek in the late afternoon / early evening. Our trip concludes today in Windhoek, and you will be dropped off at your pre-booked accommodation on return. Note - there is no accommodation tonight included in the trip. Please ask us if you would like assistance to arrange this. Additional cost applies. (Approx driving distance 450km).

Additional Information

The Namib-Naukluft National Park is the largest conservation area in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The region contains incredibly dramatic landscapes, covering part of the Namib Desert and the Naukluft mountain range. Sossusvlei is the most well-known section of the Park and is home to the tallest sand dunes in the world (some up to 300m high). On this quick visit to the dunes we can walk amongst them and marvel at the brilliant orange colours. Catching a sunrise and watching the colour change is an absolute must. A passage through the mountains on return to Windhoek completes the circuit. If you only have time to see one thing in Namibia you will not be disappointed by this excursion.
