Hike in the alpine setting of Durmitor National Park, the primeval forests and glacial lakes of Biogradska Gora National Park, and enjoy enchanting medieval Kotor, the jewel of Montenegro's sun-splashed Adriatic coast.

Additional Information

With soaring limestone peaks in its north and classic Venetian towns along its blue Adriatic, Montenegro is one of Europe's hidden gems—uncrowded and perfect for hiking. We'll hike our way from the breathtaking alpine world of Durmitor National Park and Biogradska Gora National Park down to the gorgeous coast at the Bay of Kotor, Europe's southernmost fjord. Along the way, we discover Montenegro's diverse cultural patchwork, sample a cuisine that reflects the region's blend of east and west, and sip Vranac, the deep red wine made from the ancient native grape. Our journey's finale is hikes in the Bay of Kotor, one of the most spectacular settings on the entire Adriatic Coast.

Itinerary

Days 1-4
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina / Durmitor, Montenegro / Tara River
In Sarajevo, a cultural melting pot since the Silk Road era, we stroll the 16th century Ottoman quarter, then cross the mountainous border to Montenegro, heading for the trails of Durmitor National Park, home to saw-toothed peaks and gleaming lakes. The wild Tara River Canyon invites us for a fun morning of rafting on its jade and turquoise waters (or you can opt to hike!).

Days 5-6
Biogradska Gora National Park
One of the last stands of old-growth woodlands in all Europe is protected in Biogradska Gora. Our hikes bring us through flower-filled meadows to the twin peaks of Komovi (8,159') and into the Bjelasica massif among shepherds' huts scattered through the pine forests.

Days 7-8
Mrtvica Canyon / Lake Skadar
Moraca Monastery offers us a peek into Montenegro's medieval history, and we hike to the rocky hideaway of Mrtvica Canyon amid soaring white cliffs and along the serene shores of Lake Skadar National Park. One evening, we boat to a restaurant to dine on the fresh catch of the day.

Days 9-11
Kotor / Dubrovnik, Croatia
We head to the Adriatic and the walled town of Kotor, the UNESCO-listed jewel of Montenegro's Adriatic Coast. Our hikes around majestic Bay of Kotor bring us spectacular views. Depart on Day 11 via Dubrovnik.
