Hike the Appalachian Trail to Charlies Bunion

This hike begins at the Newfound Gap Overlook which provides convenient parking (if you get there early).  It's one of the only places in the GSMNP where the Appalachian Trail intersects with a road, providing easy access for day hikers.  The trailhead is located at the northeast end of the parking lot in between the Rockefeller Memorial and the paved trail to the restrooms.  

The first 2.5 miles is a steady climb up Mt. Kephart and the trail is very rocky so be prepared.  You will enjoy climbing through the spruce forest as well as the occasional openings along the way to take-in the view.

Once you've travelled about 2.7 miles you will see the intersection with the Boulevard Trail which leads to the top of Mt. LeConte (just over 5 miles away).  Continue on the AT another quarter mile to reach the Icewater Spring Shelter.  The shelter has nice views to the south / east and is a good place to take a break.  If you want to stay at the shelter overnight, make sure to make reservations ahead of time as space is limited.

Back on the trail, you will pass the Icewater Spring and  begin a descent for the next mile to Charlies Bunion which is on a spur trail off the left side of the AT.  This famous landmark is a rock outcropping with sweeping vistas of Brushy Mountain, Mt. LeConte and Porters Mountain.  Enjoy some time here, take photos or have lunch, but make sure to pack your trash out with you!  Once you're done, retrace your steps back to the parking lot at Newfound Gap Overlook.
