Here's a challenge: How fast can you run 937 vertical meters (3074 ft) up a mountain pass? If you make it in less than an hour you get a free ride down with the cable car as well as free entry to Leukerbad's thermal baths!

Gemmi Pass is an absolutely stunning place, with its secluded scenery and the amazing views over the Swiss Alps. While people usually choose the easy way and take the cable car up the mountain they miss out on the most rewarding part:

The epic trail leading from the village of Leukerbad to Gemmi Pass! It is relatively steep with an average slope of almost 30 percent but I recommend this hike to anyone of decent fitness. If you take your time you'll also get to enjoy the stunning views a bit more!

If you're up for a challenge, Leukerbad offers a great deal: If you can complete the hike from the valley to the mountain station of the Gemmi cable car in less than 60 minutes (65 for women) you'll get a free ride back down as well as one free entry to Leukerbad Therme, the thermal baths of Leukerbad. Make sure to get your ticket at the valley station. You'll have to stamp it three times: At the valley station, about halfway up the mountain and at the reception of Hotel Wildstrubel on Gemmi Pass. Your time and rank will be published on the website of Gemmi Cableways as well!

  • Start: Gemmi Cableways valley station (elevation 1411m / 4629 ft)
  • Finish: Gemmi Cableways mountain station (elevation 2348m / 7003 ft)
  • Time: Around an hour if you're fast and two hours as a normal hike. Open from June to October (closes at first snowfall).

Note: The trail is very well maintained and absolutely safe but don't push it. Do not leave the trail!

Hike up Gemmi Pass Reviews

Did it 2 days after arrival at Leukerbad and wanted to proceed just below the rock (approximately 1/3 of the trail) for beginnings. Did it entirely anyway, but last third was exerting due to heavy wind and light rain. Trail is secure but don't leave it.
