The Secret to a Nomadic Life

There are a number of ways to make your dreams of exploring foreign places a reality. So buckle down, and maybe get a little weird, because the road to long-term travel on a budget is sure to be an adventure.

1. House Sit

Housesitters.com gives you access to homeowners all over the world. Whether the owners are going on a short business-trip abroad or leaving their vacation house on the beach for their permanent stay, you can opt to care for pets, plants, or simply pay utilities in exchange for free accommodations at their pad. The annual membership fee to get access to connect with homeowners is $119. You’ll also have to create a profile detailing your previous experience housesitting and petsitting, and pitch how responsible you are. Upload a few sweet photos of you and a pup, and start searching for your next home. When your accommodations are on the beach in Costa Rica with a private pool and BBQ deck for months at a time, it’s well worth it.

2. Work Away

In exchange for on-site work, hostels, farms, and various projects will provide you accommodations, up to three meals per day, with some even offering stipends as an added bonus. You can be recruited to run the front desk, social media pages, paint murals, provide live entertainment, or help with farm work--all depending on your skills and experience. Most places will offer a language exchange if you’re doing a workaway in a foreign country.

3. Become a Tour Guide

Tour companies around the world are often looking for travelers to provide group tours to people visiting from your home country. Become knowledgeable with the historical sights, top attractions, and famous destinations in the area so you can market your skills for a position.
