The Penetecia Creek Trail, in Alum Rock State Park, is a beautiful 3.6 mile escape from urban San Jose. The trail is perfect for families and all ages.
The trail is accessible year round and features a creek and a lake. The trail offers ample shade as it meanders along a creek. There are benches placed along the trail in perfect locations for a snack and some water. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in this park.

Hike the Penetecia Creek Trail Reviews
I don't think you can paddle on the lake, but the walks are nice if you are nearby. Can also bring a quick picnic.

I cant go to this lake without remembering my 3rd grade field trip, where we collected water from the lake to keep and observe bacteria grow under a microscope weeks later. That is a smell you'll never forget. Otherwise, this lake is a nice place to take a walk to ride a bike.
