Drive out to the end of the road at Tomales Point for an opportunity to see the Tule Elk.

Spend a day out on Tomales Point with the Pacific Ocean on one side and Tomales Bay on the other. Aside from breathtaking views, the Point Reyes National Park is home to the largest herd of Tule Elk in California.

While the Tule Elk can be seen throughout Point Reyes National Park the best opportunity to see them is in the Tule Elk Preserve. Head out to Point Reyes National Seashore and follow Pierce Point Road until the road ends. A short hike along the Tomales Point Trail will offer up more chances to see the elk, especially at Windy Gap where you can look east down toward White Gulch at a spring that attracts the herds.

Although it is possible to see Tule Elk year round, the rutting season in the late summer can be quite fascinating when the bulls can be seen bugling and looking for mates.

As always, be respectful and follow the guidelines provided by the NPS for viewing the elk.
