The Quarry Trail and Lower Big Springs Trail form a spectacularly gorgeous loop, rich with diverse landscape and plenty of wildflowers, and it's just strenuous enough to get your heart pumping.  There are so many trails to choose from at Tilden Regional Park making it easy to lengthen your hike if you feel you haven't gotten enough beautiful scenery in for the day.

The hike starts at the parking lot labeled Big Springs on the right-hand side of South Park Drive. There are trail maps provided here, so grab one and head to your left (looking at the sign) to begin hiking up the Quarry Trail.  (You can also go right for a more gradual incline.)

Once you're on the Quarry Trail, stay to the right of the forks and enjoy views of the Bay Area, sprawling, grassy hills and wooded areas as the trail climbs up towards Big Springs Trail.  About three quarters of a mile in, you will take a right at the intersection of the Quarry Trail and Lower Big Springs Trail. A change in scenery happens suddenly here, as you enter a more woodsy area.  There are wildflowers everywhere and the forest shade cools you down as you continue along the steady incline.

Once you've reached the top, to your left you will see the San Pablo Reservoir and to your right will be more stunning views of San Francisco from afar.  There are benches all along the trail to sit and enjoy lunch or a snack and soak in the views.  I suggest doing the labyrinth at the bench on the hill to the right, just over a mile on the trail.

You will come to a fork on the downhill portion of the trail.  Head right to go back to the parking or check out your map to make a longer loop via the Upper Big Springs Trail.

There is a captivating eucalyptus forest along the way down, as well as some awesome hills with tall grass swaying in the breeze.

Be aware that the trail has lots of loose rock and is open to horseback riding (avoid the poop!) and mountain biking. Wear sturdy shoes and don't forget your pup! I have seen lots of off-leash, friendly dogs on this hike.  It's the perfect hike to start your day.
