Description

Added by Lucia Lin

This is an amazing weekend backpacking trip for beginners, located just 45 minutes away from the Golden Gate Bridge!

Plan on meeting your group at Bear Valley Visitor Center, where you can obtain your camping permit and overnight parking passes as soon as the Center opens (9am on weekends/10am on weekdays). Parking is right next to the trailhead, and finding a spot shouldn't be an issue.

THE TRAIL:

Bear Valley Visitor Center -- Bear Valley Trail -- Kelham Beach (have lunch here!) -- Sky Trail -- SKY CAMP -- Sky Trail -- Mt. Wittenberg/Meadow Trail -- Bear Valley Trail -- Bear Valley Visitor Center

  • (Sat) parking to camp // ~10 miles
  • (Sun) camp to parking // ~3 miles

THE CAMPSITE:

Sky Camp has eleven individual sites and one group site, all of which have their own picnic table(s) and food storage locker. The campsite also has running water, vaulted toilets, and trash bins. If you are traveling in a group, try to reserve the group site months in advance. For individual sites, you may be able to book day of if you get lucky. But just to be safe, I highly recommend booking at least a week in advance. In clear weather, Sky Camp has a gorgeous view of Point Reyes, Drakes Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.
