Drive Joshua Tree's Geology Tour Road

Riverside County, California

Description

Added by Brian Eagen

Learn about Joshua Tree's geologic historyDrive deep into the desertExplore the transition zone between the Colorado and Mojave deserts

16 markers are found along the route which highlight some of the geologic processes that continue to shape Joshua Tree National Park. Find the free brochure just after the parking lot on the right as you begin the drive (or print it off beforehand). Stop at the markers along the drive and read the brochure for a self-guided tour.

Give yourself 2 hours to complete the entire loop, or 1.5 hours for the drive down to Squaw Tank. Low clearance vehicles should stop at Squaw Tank due to the deep sand found on the lower loop.

Remember to bring extra water just in case something goes wrong. At the Squaw Tank turn-around, you can take a short walk to visit the old dam. A map of Geology Tour road is helpful for anticipating where the next interpretive markers are.

Pit toilets are located at the start of the drive. There are no amenities beyond that point.
