• Trailheads and bathrooms• Wildlife• Free• Impressive, alternate side of Las Vegas• Full of other adventures

For those seeking a different experience during their next trip to Las Vegas.

Only twenty minutes drive from the Strip (take 215 to Charleston exit), one can find Red Rock Canyon National Park. Just before the park entrance is a road to Red Spring Park, or Calico Basin. This hiking trail, unlike the rest of Red Rock, does not require an entrance fee.

From the parking lot a series of boardwalk paths snake toward the spring and to various trailheads. Like Red Rock Park, mountains of oxidized minerals and sandstone deposits surround Red Spring. It is an oasis of adventure: mountain climbers, hikers, wild burros, the occasional desert tortoise. Plenty of vistas for great pictures. Best experienced if given three to four hours for hiking. Cyclists can also park at Red Spring and then continue to bike the thirteen-mile loop of Red Rock for a reduced entrance fee.

No gambling required; it's a win-win.
