5 Reasons You Can Have An Adventure In Your Own Backyard

You don't always have to travel to have a great adventure. Have you ever looked out your backdoor? Here are 5 ways to have your own adventure in your own backyard.

It can be hard to find time to travel in today's world. Whether it be work or school, the world is moving at speed it never has before. It is healthy to take a step back to enjoy the sights and sounds of the great outdoors. But what if you do not have time to travel? The backyard can be a spectacular place if you just look at it through the right lens.

First off, if you live on a lake or river, you have no excuse. Water is base of many great adventures. Kayaking, swimming, and fishing are just a few ways to enjoy a body of water. As a former kayak guide, nothing beats cutting through a river. You can explore inlets to your hearts content. Have you ever seen a Great Blue Heron?

Fun Fact of the Day: Nature is everywhere. With many cities moving to a green initiative it has become much easier to find city parks, trees lining the streets, and even in the buildings themselves. I encourage anyone to take advantage of these spaces. I have found them to be an excellent way to have a one or two hour adventure.

Friends make any adventure great. A lot of times its not the adventure that's great. It is the people you are with. My most fond memories of high school were the bonfires my friends and I would do. We would just chill. Someone always brought a guitar and would take requests or make song parodies. Often times, we'd talk each other into doing some sort dare.

It can be hard to create ideas at times, but just make the most of what you have. There is nothing wrong with sitting in a rocking chair or laying back in hammock with a good book. It may not sound like a thrilling adventure, but it sure beats sitting at a desk.

Lastly, be creative and keep an open mind. In the words of the great Pixar film Up, "Adventure is out there." While it may seem childish and naive, but its true! You can make anything into an adventure. The only thing holding you back is your own imagination. Make a fort in your backyard or living room, explore a local park, or have a neighborhood cookout. Nature is meant to be enjoyed. Get out there and start exploring!

"If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine. It is lethal." ~Paulo Coelho
