A fairly easy and short hike near Billings, MT makes for a good day hike into a canyon and has a nice view looking out over Bighorn Canyon.
If you park your car at the horse corral and pit toilets you will hike up a gravel road for a little bit. This part of the trail is a slight incline, then you'll stay left where the trail really starts. There are markers that indicate which way to go. There are no elevation markings, so it is hard to say how much elevation gain there is, it's definitely not flat...but it isn't too intense. As you hike up into the canyon, be sure to check out the view behind you! After awhile you come to a trail marker that says falls (to the right) and the trail continues to the left. The falls are nice and only ten feet away, so you may as well check them out, but were nothing spectacular in the Fall. If you go left and continue up the Upper Layout Creek trail you'll come to a high point on the trail. At this point there is a great view looking out where you came from. You can keep exploring the trail or head back from here.
