Description

Added by Allison Herreid

Easily accessible from Highway 61, the fast flowing Temperance River has cut deep potholes and gorges along the riverbed.

Temperance River State Park is located near Schroeder, and parking can be found alongside Highway 61 for easy access to the trail following the riverbed. There are two main falls that shape the gorges -- one just north of the highway and the other below the footbridge that is just south of the highway. It is only about a quarter of a mile from Highway 61 to the mouth of the river. Further trails follow the river north . Camping is also available with sites close to Lake Superior: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/temperance_river/camping.html

Park right off the highway and then head upstream. I would recommend reading the informational signs that are posted as I found them to be interesting. Either way enjoy some spectacular scenery on a short hike.

If I had a favorite place in MN, this would probably be at the top. This state park is typically less crowded than other north shore state parks, and there is a wide variety of landscapes - Deep gorges, rocks, waterfalls, rapids, meandering rivers. This is the only place I ever saw the ladyslipper orchid in 25 years! The gorge/inlet near lake superior is my favorite part of the park, a protected inlet has high cliff walls on either side opening to a fantastic view of the lake on one end and waterfalls on the other. The water is fairly warm for swimming by july, just be aware of water levels and undercurrents which can be dangerous for even experienced swimmers if water levels are high or if there has been a recent storm. And DO NOT ride the rapids down - there have been many deaths that way.
