Big, beautiful sunflower fields less than an hour outside of Washington, DC

These sunflower fields usually bloom in July and stay in full bloom for only a couple of weeks, so check the McKee-Beshers WMA website in June for up-to-date info about exactly when they expect the bloom to happen: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/wildl...

If you're coming from downtown Washington, DC, take the George Washington Memorial Parkway north and then get on the beltway (495) north. Take exit 39 to 190-W/River Road and stay on River Road for about 25 minutes. Look for a sign on the left for Hunting Quarter Road (sometimes it's covered by trees) and make a left there.

Here is a map of the area with parking and the sunflower fields marked: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/wildl...

There are 3 parking areas along Hunting Quarter Road - The 2nd one you come to (the middle one that's actually on Hunting Quarter Road on the map) will be the best place to park for the easiest access to a sunflower field. Once you park here, it's just a short 2-minute walk to one of the fields. There's no entrance fee.

The fields are full of bugs so you may want to bring bug spray, especially if you plan on walking among the sunflowers. The sunflowers are also very tall so if you're short like me and you want to get nice shots of them from above, bring a step stool!
