Description

Between 8 and 9 miles round trip, this hike features more than 40 switch backs and 2,900 feet of elevation gain to reach more than 9,000 ft. at summit, one of the highest points in the San Gabriel mountains. Mt. Baden-Powell is also part of the Pacific Crest Trail, so you’ll see your fair share of backpackers coming through.
Best to put Vincent Gap into your GPS as Google Maps will often take you via Big Rock Creek Rd., an incredibly sketchy, skinny dirt road. Take Angeles Crest Highway to the large parking lot. Getting here, you’ll likely lose service, so coordinate with any friends on a time to meet.
When you’ve arrived, the trailhead is clearly marked. Start your ascent along the many switch backs and take breaks when needed. As you get within a mile or so from summit, things open up and the trees change from lush to weathered and gnarled.
You'll soon see the top of the ridge and take in 360-degree views. At this point, you'll come upon the Wally Waldron tree, which is said to be the oldest tree in the San Gabriels at approximately 1500 years.
Summiting Mt. Baden-Powell is incredible, a close second to Mt. Baldy. The views are truly incredible and it’s comfortable enough up there to chat with some people, have lunch, and relax before the trek back down. Keep in mind it can be chilly in the shade during spring and fall and hot in the summer.
