Visit the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge
Fallon, Nevada
Description
Added by Alex E
This amazing oasis is a hidden gem in the middle of the Nevada desert. The vast marsh offers great photography opportunities of wildlife and the beautiful landscape.
From Fallon, Nevada on US-Hwy 50, head east for 5 miles to NV-116. Turn Left onto NV-116 and take this road for 12 miles until you reach the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge. From the intersection of Stillwater Rd and Hunter Rd, you can head North on Hunter Rd, which leads to hiking trails or you can continue east, and the refuge offers a scenic car loop with more hiking trails.
The car loop offers the best opportunities to see thousands of migrating birds. Although the refuge is very isolated, it is only 60 miles east of Reno, Nevada. The normally dry, desert landscape transforms into this beautiful rare marsh land that 280 different species of birds call home, including the rare American white pelican. Hike, bike, drive or camp the 80,000 isolated acres the refuge and enjoy this hidden gem that offers thousands of different photo opportunities. The refuge is extremely hot in summer and extremely cold with snow showers in winter. All the roads in the refuge are improved dirt roads, so a vehicle capable of off road travel may be needed during times of inclement weather. Most of the year the roads will be fine for any vehicle. I visited the park during the early morning hours and was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise cresting over the mountains.
