Description

The Russell Fork River offers a section for everyone from Beginner Class II rapids all the way to Expert Class V rapids in the gorge. Stunning scenery, crisp water, great hiking.

Given that many sections of this river require advanced skill to paddle we are simply going to discuss how to paddle the easy Class II section from Carson Island by the Blue Hole Pay Lake into town.  This section is a great Whitewater warm up for beginner Stand Up Paddle Boarders.  Run shuttle by parking a vehicle at the takeout behind the Pizza and sub shop or simply get those nice guys to shuttle you!  It's only $5.00.  They will drive you up and drop you off at either Carson Island or Ratliff Hole.  If you start your journey at Ratliff park and surf area know that once you round the bend you will hit a class II rapid in the curve and then the Class III rapid Meat Grinder (appropriately named) You can easily portage this rapid on the right.  Next up is Pinball rapid which is technically Class II+ but has flipped many an intermediate paddler.  From here enjoy the scenery and the fun class two rapids into town!
