Hiking the Sheltowee Trace: Vanhook Falls
London, Kentucky
Description
Added by Tyler Kirby
This adventure is just one segment of the Sheltowee Trace Trail. The Sheltowee is 319 miles which can be a huge hike/expedition. However it's is quite easy to just take on a segment like Vanhook Falls trail. It is a 2.5 mile trail that follows a great stream with all kinds of features. There is all kinds of small stream wildlife, small waterfalls, small rapids, etc. This trail also crosses two larger streams Pounder Branch which then empties into Cane Creek. You can even wade in Cane Creek if you desire. Also there are small bridges across these if you desire to not get wet. Once over Cane Creek it isn't much further to Vanhook Falls.
The trail head is across from the pull off parking lot at the corner of Ky-192 and Ky-1193.There is at most a 300 foot difference between the lowest and highest part of this trail , so elevation change isn't a big factor. The trail is well marked with Sheltowee Turtle markers, and the trail is fairly easy to follow. It's 2.5 miles to Vanhook Falls, so 5 miles round trip. The falls are 40 ft high where the thin stream splashes on rocks below. There are small creeks you have to cross that don't have bridges like Pounder Branch and Cane Creek, so you might get your feet wet.
