I can't recall the date exactly, but it was during the summer of 2016 only a couple of months after I turned 18. I can easily say this day is in the running for the best day of my life. My best friend for 5 years had agreed to go to hanging rock with me. We cleared all plans for an entire Saturday a week in advance. This was a big day because he was going to leave soon to go to his first apartment where I wouldn't see him for the rest of the school year while I stayed local. When the day finally arrived we got breakfast together at local place before heading out to our 1 hour road trip. We sang and had fun all the way down until finally arriving. This is my first time taking a *road trip* on my own and as my friend told me it was his first time hiking. Ever. We chose the main hanging rock trail to start out with. The climb was steady for the first 3 quarters of the trail but the last bit had a steep ascend. I find myself to be more nimble due to my light frame and could climb with ease. Meanwhile my friend, Who is over 6 feet and quite built struggled on the tedious task. I know he is one to enjoy a good workout and adventure but worried that he would dislike climbing due to the strenuous requirements. After about an hour we reached the top. The forest cleared and a massive rock protruded from the mountain to create a risky, but flat surface to see the view. I had been here many times with my family but none recently. While absorbed in what I saw I had forgotten about my friend. He had wandered off to an edge of the rock and looked uneasy to relax. He said he was afraid of heights but the scene around him was so much he wanted to sit down and that his wants and fears conflicted. With some reassuring, he found a cozy spot to rest and looked out into the landscape. Already familiar with the scene, I took some pictures for future value and explored beyond the provided trail. Hanging Rock is a great place to explore safely to other hidden gems. Bouldering is abundant, and hidden trails are even more so. What was planned to be 30 minutes of relaxing easily turned into 2 hours. The hike down was much easier and we spoke little as to collect ourselves after a view that seemed to take us away. We explored much more of the park before departing back home. My friend described his experience as something he couldn't quite explain, but loved. I hope to continue to hike with him and other friends of mine.
